Introduction to becoming a driving instructor
An Introduction For those who want to become a driving instructor
The Register of Approved Driving Instructors (ADI) was set up in the interests of road safety in order to maintain and improve the standard of car driving instruction available to the general public.
It also ensures that the public can expect an acceptable standard of tuition from those registered as driving instructors. It is administered by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), an Executive Agency of the Department of Transport, under the provisions of the Road Traffic Act 1988.
This Act makes it illegal for anyone to charge (either money or monies worth) for instruction in driving a motorcar unless:
• their name is on the Register of Approved Driving Instructors
• they hold a trainee's "Licence to give instruction" issued by the Registrar
The legal requirements are contained in The Road Traffic Act 1988 and The Motor Cars (Driving Instruction) Regulations 2005.
That's the technical side out the way, now let's cut to the chase. When you become a driving instructor what you gain is a Government recognised qualification, one that allows you to move from Lands End to Aberdeen and be guaranteed to be able to walk into a job, either by going to the nearest driving school and starting a franchise or by simply putting an ad in the local paper.
You do get a job where you can choose the hours you want to work and the days you want to work - Although in reality you are guided by the times and days your students can do, as most will be at College 9-4 mon to fri!
You also become self employed, if you take holidays you don't get holiday pay, If you are ill, unless you have insurance of some kind - You don't get paid.
But you do get the satisfaction of seeing people who complete nervous wrecks at first, mature and grow in confidence because of the way you teach and how after a fairly short time they pass their driving test and finally attain their dream to drive, and forever in that persons life, it will be you who they remember as the one who made it all possible!
