Adi part 3 commentary driving

Commentary Driving

For anyone becoming a driving instructor, commentary driving is an essential part of your training. It should start as soon as you are doing part one. Not only will it help you to stay alert and focused on your part 2 training, but it will give you a solid platform for when you begin your adi part 3 training.

It is quite surprising the amount of trainee driving instructors who come to me, having failed 2 or 3 attempts at part3 and yet cannot commentary drive. To put it in simple terms commentary driving is the ability to transfer knowledge and what is required in the smallest degree into words.
A classic example is the use of the clutch, most people will say "lift the clutch up," what they really mean is "lift the clutch up a tiny fraction and then hold your foot still."
Such a seemingly small difference in the commands can make a huge difference on your part 3, as your examiner will do exactly what you say and lift his foot off the clutch completely!
Try making a simple script for moving off and stopping, think it through in logical order and then write it down.

"Clutch down, Turn your left palm to face me, so your thumb is up in the air, push the gear stick towards me and then forward for first gear, keep your foot still, with your right foot lightly press the gas pedal until you get a slight humming noise on the engine, hold your foot still. Now slowly lift your left foot little fractions on the clutch until you feel the bite point and hold your foot still"

It may seem hard at first but then you learn it like a script and eventally it becomes second nature.
